Started in 1973, Young Arts aims to provide opportunities for children and young people, aged 8 - 18, to expand their horizons through their involvement in creative activities and to inspire them with a lasting enthusiasm for the arts, our heritage and its conservation.  The Arts Society Haslemere has been involved in various Young Arts projects, details of the most recent can be found below.

EXHIBITIONS

ART DISPLAY BOARDS AT HASLEMERE STATION
In 2024 the usual art exhibition in the Haslemere station Waiting Room  enjoyed by travellers waiting for their trains has been renewed.

The artwork at the station has in the past been contributed by Barrow Hills School, Camelsdale Primary School, St Bartholomew’s Church of England Primary School and Woolmer Hill School. 

HDFAS Young Arts Secretary Isabelle Cole will continue to organise and set up a permanent art display in the Waiting Room at Haslemere Station to showcase the work of local school children.

In November 2015, 8 large frames were hung on the walls of the Waiting Room to exhibit work by pupils at four local schools, on a rotating basis. Smaller frames which form part of the display give descriptions of the schools' art projects, with an additional small frame giving information about HDFAS, the aims of the project and other activities carried out by the society. Each collection of work will be on display for the duration of a term and the following holiday. The first four schools to take part were Barrow Hills School, Camelsdale Primary School, St Bartholomew’s Church of England Primary School and Woolmer Hill School. It is anticipated that other schools will participate in the future. The official opening took place at the Station on 28th November.

Funds for this project were donated entirely by HDFAS. Without the permission of South West Trains this project could not have gone ahead – the company has kindly agreed to the exhibition as part of their wish to connect with the community. Art teachers at the schools contributed their considerable hard work in providing the artwork and producing interesting displays for the boards.
 

MUSEUM CORNER EXHIBITIONS
Summer exhibitions of artwork by Camelsdale Primary School pupils at the HASLEMERE EDUCATIONAL MUSEUM

For the last two years, HDFAS has donated funds so that Camelsdale Primary School can use the corner exhibition space in the main entrance hall at the Museum.

Summer of 2017: Iconic Art of Stage and Screen
Black and white paintings of well-known characters from stage and screen were on display during August of 2017 (see below on right).

August 2016: Egyptian Portraits

This year work by Year 5 pupils (age 9-10 years) in Lemurs Class drew portraits of their friends which they then traced and turned into profile pictures. Colour was added and the images transformed into Egyptian portraits. Papyrus, golden masks and urns were also created.
 


CAMELSDALE FIRST SCHOOL ART EXHIBITION at the Haslemere Educational Museum
Saturday 5th - 19th April 2014

Supported by HDFAS, an exhibition of work by pupils at Camelsdale First School took place at the Haslemere Educational Museum 
during the Easter holidays. The exhibition showcased mixed media art working towards the Arts Award Scheme. 

There were three projects on show: Mod-Roc Dinosaurs by the Year 3 'Otters' Class, Clay shoes by Year 6 and Iconic Art (see examples in the picture above) by Year 6 on the theme of film, theatre and television. The displays of colourful shoes in glass cases and dinosaurs of every shape and size roaming round the room, overlooked by striking acrylic paintings of well-known characters from stage and screen, were set up by staff from the school, together with Mrs Barbara Murray, HDFAS Young Arts Secretary, and Mrs Alison Marston, HDFAS Programme Secretary.

The exhibition was officially opened on Saturday 5th April by Mrs Sarah Barnes, HDFAS Chairman. Three £5 vouchers, donated by the Art Shop in Wey Hill and HDFAS, were awarded to the most deserving entry in each category: Leo won the Year 3 Mod-Roc Dinosaur prize for his Ultrasaurus, getting credit for a very long neck and fierce expression, Erica’s colourful green and pink trainer won the Year 6 Clay Shoe category and Madison won the Year 6 Iconic Art prize for her painting on the theme of The Wizard of Oz.

Young visitors to the exhibition could take part in a quiz to guess the identity of the iconic images in the 26 paintings.


HDFAS supported the AppART Autumn Art and Sculpture Exhibition at Secretts, Hurst Farm, Milford, Surrey GU8 5HU. 
The exhibition took place from 6th to 21st October.
AppART is an art and sculpture initiative, designed to encourage interest and participation in the visual arts. The first event brought together the work of some 300 artists from all over Surrey and beyond, providing free access to the local and wider community. AppArt is run by Evelyn and Gwyn Phillips, who organised the highly successful VivArtis Festival at King Edward’s School, Witley, for the last fifteen years. 
HDFAS has had a long association with King Edward's School and their donation to AppART enabled some schools to take children to the exhibition.
 

WORKSHOPS

THE BIG DRAW at HASLEMERE EDUCATIONAL MUSEUM 
In 2017 the society continued to support the Big Draw at Haslemere Educational Museum.  The event took place on Saturday, 7th October, providing a chance for the whole family to explore their artistic talent using a range of different materials. Organised by the museum's Education Officer, Kay Topping, this year's theme was a jungle populated with exotic birds and handprinted animals.  The project took up an entire wall in the Museum annexe.  Some handprinted details can be seen below.

In October 2016 HDFAS donated £50 towards the Big Draw events at the Haslemere Educational Museum.
The Big Draw is the world’s largest drawing festival with thousands of drawing activities which take place in the UK and abroad. These events are for those who love to draw, as well as for those who think they can’t! HDFAS has supported this event annually since 2014.  The 2016 work of collaborative art was 'Our Wonderful Wish Machine' - a truly mixed media creation with bits and pieces, including computer parts, paper, string, wire and various other objects. 


The theme in 2015 was ‘Every Drawing Tells a Story’. There were Family Drop–in events, picture–making using the shape of hands or feet, the chance to join in and create both individual pictures and a collaborative artwork, splatter and sponge workshops and a talk by illustrator Leon Hills.
 


HDFAS YOUNG ARTS PHOTOGRAPHIC WORKSHOP: MARCH 2008
A Photographic Workshop was arranged with acclaimed photographer Peter Searight. The participants went out onto Lynchmere Common, dodging the showers, and had a very enjoyable and rewarding morning. The main areas covered were composition, perspective and ultimately the process of transferring images to a computer, with a serious analysis of the results by Peter Searight. 
 

PORTRAIT PAINTING: JULY 2007

HDFAS donated £200 for a Portrait Workshop with local artist Roger Dellar, which took place at Haslemere Museum. The young artists produced portraits, a selection of which were on display at the September lecture at Haslemere Hall. The event was a great success and was written up in the Haslemere Herald – the article included a photograph of Roger Dellar and all the participants.


VISITS TO WATTS ART GALLERY: a new project for 2016
A new project, initiated in the Autumn of 2016, has been set up to enable groups of children from local schools to visit Watts Art Gallery in Compton. 
A donation of funds will go towards the cost of the gallery visit.

The first school to benefit was Camelsdale First School. £90 was donated to facilitate a visit to the gallery by a group of 30 children. It was a great success and was followed up by a second visit when children were given the opportunity to work in clay, under supervision. Back at school they completed projects, as part of course work, designing tiles in the style of William de Morgan, such as the Beast and other subjects they had observed at the Gallery.

It is hoped more schools will participate in future.


ACTIVITIES WEEK at WOOLMER HILL SCHOOL: July 2016
HDFAS gave £50 towards the cost of an Artist in Residence during Activities Week at Woolmer Hill School. 
Diana Burch, B.A. Hons. Fine Arts, worked with Year 8 and 9 pupils on a project entitled From the Ordinary to the Extra Ordinary for which they explored the study of Peasant Art.

JULY 2015: ART DISPLAY BOARD DONATED TO ST BARTHOLOMEW'S 
C of E PRIMARY SCHOOL

Mrs Sarah Barnes, HDFAS Chairman, officially 'opened' the Art Display Board at St Bartholomew's C of E Primary School on 20th July. HDFAS donated £66 to enable the display board to be supplied and hung in the main assembly hall. The board will be used to exhibit pupils' art work and on-going arts projects. Mrs Barbara Murray, HDFAS Young Arts organiser, who made all the arrangements, was also present, with Mrs Alison Marston, HDFAS Vice Chairman and Programme Secretary. The board was set up by Mrs Linda Lindars, art teacher at the school.


SUMMER 2015: HASLEMERE ART SOCIETY MEMBERS HELP PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN
Two projects were organised by HDFAS to give children the benefit of the experience of ‘real’ artists.

ART IN ACTION WITH ROBBIE MURDOCH
Local artist Robbie Murdoch set up his easle in the playground at Camelsdale First School on 14th July and painted a picture of the school. Children were able to see how his painting developed.


UNDERWATER CREATURES WITH ANNE BEWSEY 
Anne Bewsey joined Year One at St Bartholomew’s C of E Primary School to help with a mixed media art project on the theme of underwater creatures. Inspired by the book "The Rainbow Fish" by Marcus Pfister, the children created an underwater scene in the corner of their classroom, with draped netting representating waves and a variety of underwater creatures hung in between. Long thin fishes and big colourful fishes floated alongside puffa fish, a shark and seahorses. Mrs Bewsey, a watercolour artist, helped pupils decorate their fish with paint, crayons, pieces of bright paper and sweet wrappers.

June 2014: An easel was donated by HDFAS to CAMELSDALE FIRST SCHOOL

The easel will be used to exhibit a painting by one of the pupils, in a main area of the school, on a regular basis. 
 


HDFAS WORKING WITH CAMELSDALE FIRST SCHOOL 2013

2013 projects included:

  £200 has been donated to the school to help fund training for the Arts Award.

  A donation to the school of textiles is being organised and will take place in the Autumn. 

  Local artist, Roger Dellar, spent a morning painting in the school's playground. The children and teachers were thrilled to see his picture taking shape.

DONATION TO HASLEMERE MUSEUM JUNIOR ART CLUB IN 2012
HDFAS donated £50 to the Haslemere Museum to help supply art materials for the Junior Club that meets at the museum on Saturday mornings.
 

YOUNG ARTISTS

SPONSORSHIP OF A MUSIC STUDENT
In 2017, the Arts Society Haslemere was introduced to Anastasia, a young Rumanian musician who has come to live in the UK, to further her studies. She is a student at Woolmer Hill School.  The society have undertaken to sponsor her and pay for music lessons to help her reach her full potential.
Anastasia won the Senior Solo prize at the Woolmer Hill Musician of the Year Awards in March 2018.
Below is a picture of Anastasia playing at a short concert given in July 2017 for the benefit of the committee. 
 

DONATION TO WOOLMER HILL SCHOOL ART STUDENT

For the last three years HDFAS has awarded a prize to the most deserving art student, selected by the school’s Art Department.

In 2018 Jerome Davidson, treasurer of the Arts Society Haslemere, presented the award to an 11th year student (see below on left). The award winning artwork can be seen on the right.

In 2017, Scarlet, a student in year 11, received her prize from Mrs Alison Marston, chairman of the Arts Society Haslemere. See below.

In 2016, ELOISE ATTER was awarded £60 for her passion, relentless work ethic,creativity and flair.

GCSE Art & Photography Exhibition 2016, Woolmer Hill School.

In 2015, CHARLOTTE HALL, one of the students whose work was included in the GCSE exhibition that took place at the school from 10th to 16th July, was awarded an Art Shop token, to the value of £60. The prize was presented on 17th September.


MARCH 2015: SPONSORSHIP OF WOOLMER HILL ART STUDENT
Joanna Luff has submitted a portrait to be considered for selection for the RBA Exhibition
The Royal Society of British Artists Annual Exhibition shows the best of contemporary representational painting, sculpture, printmaking and drawing. NADFAS works in partnership with the RBA to find the most outstanding work by final year A–level students from around the country and display it as part of the exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London. Last year fifty–two Societies submitted 370 digital images of 'A' level or equivalent artwork, of which 27 pieces were selected and exhibited.

In 2013 HDFAS awarded Joanna a prize of £50 to go towards her art studies.


THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF BRITISH ARTISTS (RBA) ANNUAL EXHIBITION:
King Edward's School Sixth Form student exhibited at the Mall Galleries in 2012.
In 2011 sixth form art students at King Edward's School, Witley, participated in the Sixth Form Art Competition organised by NADFAS. The RBA President, James Horton, and his fellow council members selected 54 works for inclusion in the annual RBA exhibition at the Mall Galleries. 
HDFAS was delighted that one of their entrants, Cameron Gallaher, studying at King Edward's School, was accepted and saw his work, titled Fallen Fledgling, hung at the annual exhibition from 29th February to 9th March. Those students whose work has been accepted are given the title RBA Scholar for the duration of the show and had their work displayed alongside professional artists' exhibits.  Cameron's painting was shown as a 10" x 8" reproduction.
 


WHY SAVE ANYTHING? A free event for Students age 15 - 18, at TATE BRITAIN
Friday 21 October 2011

HDFAS provided funds to enable a student from King Edward's School, Witley, to participate in this event. Speakers from the V&A, Tate and NADFAS, eminent contemporary artists, conservators and curators participated in discussions, talks and practical workshops exploring the future value of art and culture in the field of conservation in museums and galleries. Activities included: Film and Digital Media, Frame conservation, Photography, Painting Conservation, Paper conservation technique and X-Ray techniques.
 

KING EDWARD'S SCHOOL, WITLEY: Sponsorship of A–Level Art Student 2007 and 2008

HDFAS gave £250 to sponsor a project by an A–level art student in 2007, with a further £100 being donated in 2008.
 

COMPETITIONS

SPONSORSHIP OF JUNIOR ART PRIZES AT VIVARTIS AT KING EDWARD'S SCHOOL: 2009–2011

For three years HDFAS donated funds to the Vivartis Autumn Arts Festival to sponsor first and second prize in two categories (5-6 years and 7-8 years) of the Junior and Prep Schools Art Competition. Sums of £260 were donated each year and the prizes were presented to the winners by Penny Davidson in 2011 and by Jane Stopford-Russell in 2010 and 2009.

The winners in 2011 came from Barfield School and Prebendal School, both of which received cheques for £100. The winning pictures were produced in a variety of media including watercolour, batik, silk painting and collage. In 2009, a private evening visit to the Festival was also arranged by Barbara Murray, for HDFAS members and their guests. An informal talk on 'The concept of the Vivartis Arts Festival' was given by Evelyn Phillips, Festival Director. For photos of that event visit the 2009 Gallery page. 
 

NATIONWIDE SIXTH FORM ART COMPETITION: JULY 2010

Four paintings by sixth form art students at King Edward's School, Witley, were chosen and forwarded to NADFAS House, to be included in a nationwide painting competition for sixth formers. Judges from the Royal Society of British Artists will make the final selection of paintings to be hung at the Mall Galleries, London, in March of 2011. 

Barbara Murray (pictured left), the HDFAS Young Arts events organiser, was on the Selection Committee who chose the four paintings from King Edward's; she has successfully entered and sold her own paintings at the Vivartis Autumn Art Festival for a number of years.

HASLEMERE FESTIVAL ART COMPETITION 2009

A donation of £25 was made for the first prize in the Junior category (under 12 yrs) of the Haslemere Festival 'Images of Haslemere' Art Competition, which took place in May 2009. Entries could be carried out in any medium.  Winner of the Under 12s Junior category was Jemima Barr (11 yrs) whose painting, along with other entries, was on display at the Haslemere Museum.

UNDERWATER CREATURES WITH ANNE BEWSEY 
Anne Bewsey joined Year One at St Bartholomew’s C of E Primary School to help with a mixed media art project on the theme of underwater creatures. Inspired by the book "The Rainbow Fish" by Marcus Pfister, the children created an underwater scene in the corner of their classroom, with draped netting representating waves and a variety of underwater creatures hung in between. Long thin fishes and big colourful fishes floated alongside puffa fish, a shark and seahorses. Mrs Bewsey, a watercolour artist, helped pupils decorate their fish with paint, crayons, pieces of bright paper and sweet wrappers.

June 2014: An easel was donated by HDFAS to CAMELSDALE FIRST SCHOOL

The easel will be used to exhibit a painting by one of the pupils, in a main area of the school, on a regular basis. 
 


HDFAS WORKING WITH CAMELSDALE FIRST SCHOOL 2013

2013 projects included:

  £200 has been donated to the school to help fund training for the Arts Award.

  A donation to the school of textiles is being organised and will take place in the Autumn. 

  Local artist, Roger Dellar, spent a morning painting in the school's playground. The children and teachers were thrilled to see his picture taking shape.

DONATION TO HASLEMERE MUSEUM JUNIOR ART CLUB IN 2012
HDFAS donated £50 to the Haslemere Museum to help supply art materials for the Junior Club that meets at the museum on Saturday mornings.
 

YOUNG ARTISTS

SPONSORSHIP OF A MUSIC STUDENT
In 2017, the Arts Society Haslemere was introduced to Anastasia, a young Rumanian musician who has come to live in the UK, to further her studies. She is a student at Woolmer Hill School.  The society have undertaken to sponsor her and pay for music lessons to help her reach her full potential.
Anastasia won the Senior Solo prize at the Woolmer Hill Musician of the Year Awards in March 2018.
Below is a picture of Anastasia playing at a short concert given in July 2017 for the benefit of the committee. 
 

DONATION TO WOOLMER HILL SCHOOL ART STUDENT

For the last three years HDFAS has awarded a prize to the most deserving art student, selected by the school’s Art Department.

In 2018 Jerome Davidson, treasurer of the Arts Society Haslemere, presented the award to an 11th year student (see below on left). The award winning artwork can be seen on the right.

In 2017, Scarlet, a student in year 11, received her prize from Mrs Alison Marston, chairman of the Arts Society Haslemere. See below.

In 2016, ELOISE ATTER was awarded £60 for her passion, relentless work ethic,creativity and flair.

GCSE Art & Photography Exhibition 2016, Woolmer Hill School.

In 2015, CHARLOTTE HALL, one of the students whose work was included in the GCSE exhibition that took place at the school from 10th to 16th July, was awarded an Art Shop token, to the value of £60. The prize was presented on 17th September.


MARCH 2015: SPONSORSHIP OF WOOLMER HILL ART STUDENT
Joanna Luff has submitted a portrait to be considered for selection for the RBA Exhibition
The Royal Society of British Artists Annual Exhibition shows the best of contemporary representational painting, sculpture, printmaking and drawing. NADFAS works in partnership with the RBA to find the most outstanding work by final year A–level students from around the country and display it as part of the exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London. Last year fifty–two Societies submitted 370 digital images of 'A' level or equivalent artwork, of which 27 pieces were selected and exhibited.

In 2013 HDFAS awarded Joanna a prize of £50 to go towards her art studies.


THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF BRITISH ARTISTS (RBA) ANNUAL EXHIBITION:
King Edward's School Sixth Form student exhibited at the Mall Galleries in 2012.
In 2011 sixth form art students at King Edward's School, Witley, participated in the Sixth Form Art Competition organised by NADFAS. The RBA President, James Horton, and his fellow council members selected 54 works for inclusion in the annual RBA exhibition at the Mall Galleries. 
HDFAS was delighted that one of their entrants, Cameron Gallaher, studying at King Edward's School, was accepted and saw his work, titled Fallen Fledgling, hung at the annual exhibition from 29th February to 9th March. Those students whose work has been accepted are given the title RBA Scholar for the duration of the show and had their work displayed alongside professional artists' exhibits.  Cameron's painting was shown as a 10" x 8" reproduction.
 


WHY SAVE ANYTHING? A free event for Students age 15 - 18, at TATE BRITAIN

HDFAS provided funds to enable a student from King Edward's School, Witley, to participate in this event. Speakers from the V&A, Tate and NADFAS, eminent contemporary artists, conservators and curators participated in discussions, talks and practical workshops exploring the future value of art and culture in the field of conservation in museums and galleries. Activities included: Film and Digital Media, Frame conservation, Photography, Painting Conservation, Paper conservation technique and X-Ray techniques.
 

KING EDWARD'S SCHOOL, WITLEY: Sponsorship of A–Level Art Student 2007 and 2008

HDFAS gave £250 to sponsor a project by an A–level art student in 2007, with a further £100 being donated in 2008.
 

COMPETITIONS

SPONSORSHIP OF JUNIOR ART PRIZES AT VIVARTIS AT KING EDWARD'S SCHOOL: 2009–2011

For three years HDFAS donated funds to the Vivartis Autumn Arts Festival to sponsor first and second prize in two categories (5-6 years and 7-8 years) of the Junior and Prep Schools Art Competition. Sums of £260 were donated each year and the prizes were presented to the winners by Penny Davidson in 2011 and by Jane Stopford-Russell in 2010 and 2009.

The winners in 2011 came from Barfield School and Prebendal School, both of which received cheques for £100. The winning pictures were produced in a variety of media including watercolour, batik, silk painting and collage. In 2009, a private evening visit to the Festival was also arranged by Barbara Murray, for HDFAS members and their guests. An informal talk on 'The concept of the Vivartis Arts Festival' was given by Evelyn Phillips, Festival Director. For photos of that event visit the 2009 Gallery page. 
 

NATIONWIDE SIXTH FORM ART COMPETITION: JULY 2010

Four paintings by sixth form art students at King Edward's School, Witley, were chosen and forwarded to NADFAS House, to be included in a nationwide painting competition for sixth formers. Judges from the Royal Society of British Artists will make the final selection of paintings to be hung at the Mall Galleries, London, in March of 2011. 

Barbara Murray (pictured left), the HDFAS Young Arts events organiser, was on the Selection Committee who chose the four paintings from King Edward's; she has successfully entered and sold her own paintings at the Vivartis Autumn Art Festival for a number of years.

HASLEMERE FESTIVAL ART COMPETITION 2009

A donation of £25 was made for the first prize in the Junior category (under 12 yrs) of the Haslemere Festival 'Images of Haslemere' Art Competition, which took place in May 2009. Entries could be carried out in any medium.  Winner of the Under 12s Junior category was Jemima Barr (11 yrs) whose painting, along with other entries, was on display at the Haslemere Museum.
